Story of the Song -
Following a year of Zoom, DoorDash and pandemic lockdown, we found ourselves in the late Winter of 2021 searching for an outdoor outlet of energy and fun. Tara ran across an ad soliciting vendors for, what we considered an intriguingly named festival, in neighboring state Kentucky - Play Think Flow & Arts Festival! Tara had, as of late, become very creative with yarn and she inquired about vending her wares at the PlayThink Festival and received a reply from Paige Hankla, the CEO of PlayThink.
Unfortunately, before she could proceed further, Tara had suddenly gone blind in her right eye and was diagnosed with a very rare and very deadly ocular cancer. Thoughts of festival life diminished as we focused on her therapy. Fortunately there is a very successful radiation procedure that is 95% effective at eliminating this Cancer. Everything appeared successful, she was still blind and we were optimistic that the cancer was gone and that she may regain some or all sight in that eye.
Sometime shortly after this procedure, Bill found an advertisement for workshop facilitators and teachers at this same PlayThink Flow & Arts Festival. Neither of us really knew what this was about. What we did know is that premodern “Yoga” is simply the surrender to “Flow” as defined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. So we applied to lead one of our Sound Sojourn and Gong Baths, an Introduction to Somatic Yoga, a Kirtan, and some Tantrik philosophy & practice. Somewhat surprisingly and thankfully our proposals were accepted.
Not knowing quite what to expect, we showed up early to the Festival with eyes, arms and hearts open to all possibilities while warily selecting our foam noses. The stunning Terrapin Hill venue backdropping the frantic last-minute activity of creating a festive haven as we reconnoitered the grounds and slowly set up camp. Most calming!
The PlayThink event was quite eye-opening. Bill commented that it looked like the kids with hoops and sacks at the back of the ‘70s Dead shows now have their own festival! Delightful experience this turned out to be. The similarities (identicalities?) between mastering a flow art and single-point meditation are striking and require further contemplation.
We opened ourselves to absorbing the “vibe” of Playthink. While resting in our camp and observing the firefly-lit trees in synesthetic synchrony with the pulsing drum circle filling the sky with sound and light - this song came to Tara.
